Whispers on the 39th Latitude: Battlefield of Chaldiran/Iran – August 23, 1514 The Battle of Chaldiran was fought between the Ottomans and Safavids, an empire (1501-1722) that was based in what is today Iran. Ottomans (dominant Sunni Muslims from Turkey) won the battle over the Safavids army. Historians consider the Battle of Chaldiran as one of the ten that shaped the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans decisively routed the Safavids at Chaldiran and went on to march into the Safavid capital and loot it. The battle led to Ottoman territorial expansion into the East, with the whole of Anatolia being annexed along with what are now Kurdish lands.
